A massive crowd at Corbet’s Group Mother Mountain Speedway witnessed some fantastic racing in round two of the Ford Wreckers Redcliffe Summer Slam. Darren Kane (Dominator Aus1) led all 40 laps in a welcome return to form for the Ian Boettcher Race Parts Team. Sean Black (Sweet 26) was second and Steve Jordan (Sweet 10) third.
Preliminary racing saw nine heat races with wins going to Darren Kane, Nicholas O’Keeffe – two wins (Sweet 20), Gary Pagel (Dominator 5), Mick Nicola (KO3), Steve Jordan, Sean Black, Sam Roza (Sweet 77) and Justin Smithwick (Sweet 63).
The top ten in points were Darren Kane (104), Justin Smithwick (104), Matty Pascoe (100), Nicholas O’Keeffe (100), Steve Jordan (100), Sean Black (100), Sam Roza (100), Tania Smith (Rocket 3) (96), Gary Pagel (96), Zac Pascoe (Dominator 51) (88).
Nineteen cars were set for the forty lap journey however a mechanical issue with the O’Keeffe car would see him retire to the infield unable to take up his position. Darren Kane led away with Sean Black forging straight into second, Justin Smithwick to third and Matty Pascoe to fourth on the first lap. On lap seven Matty Pascoe was able to pass Smithwick, Pascoe then soon joined the leading duo of Kane and Black and the three raced closely. Meanwhile Smithwick, Steve Jordan and Tania Smith were having a great battle until Jordan was able to slip underneath on lap thirty. With five laps left to run Matty Pascoe made an uncharacteristic error and spun the 47 Sweet to bring on the cautions and be relegated to the rear of the field. On the thirty-eighth circuit Tania Smith was able to pass Smithwick coming out of the hairpin for fourth, the top three remained unchanged with Darren Kane scoring a flag to flag victory over Sean Black and Steve Jordan. Smithwick survived to finish in fifth. The first development series driver home was Zac Pascoe who finished in seventh position.
The Dominator Australia 1 is sponsored by Ian Boettcher Race Parts, Dominator Race Cars, Motorsport Fuels and DRW Racewear. Sunday nights pit crew was limited to Greg Boettcher and Todd Lloyd with David Knight and Brenton Knight unable to attend the two nights of the Summer Slam. Greg had this to say following the Team’s win “… we went from one extreme to the other from the night before. The last two nights racing on slick tracks certainly had Brenton working overtime at home on the simulator”. Greg also thanked Tristan Green and Bruce McKenzie for lending a hand.
