Super Sedan Association Media Release
With 18 cars in the pits for round six of the Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series at Gympie’s Mothar Mountain Speedway on Saturday night (December 3), the scene was set for another great night of competition in Australia’s premier season-long Super Sedan series. Unfortunately, rain swept across the venue early in the night, bringing proceedings to a premature end with just two heat races completed.
Whilst it was a disappointing outcome, there were some highlights and spectacular moments before the rain came.
The opening heat race saw Jason Campbell surge from deep in the field to upstage series leader and hometown favourite Mark Pagel with a narrow win. Having initially been shuffled back through the field from the front row, Mick Roza recovered to finish in third spot. Wayne Randall, meanwhile, made an unceremonious exit on lap four when his KRT Trenching Rocket expired in a cloud of smoke.
The second heat featured a remarkable drive from Darren Kane to advance from the third row of the grid and finish more than four seconds clear of the field, lapping the hillside layout more than half a second quicker than anybody else. Rockhampton’s Gavin Northfield, who started third but had assumed the lead after just two laps, finished in second spot ahead of Dempsie Pails.
The early end to proceedings means no change to the pecking order in the championship standings, with Pagel remaining atop the points table with the next round of the Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series also to be contested at Mothar Mountain on Saturday, February 4.
However, teams will return to Gympie as soon as December 29 for the opening round of the 2016/2017 Summer Slam Tour. To be conducted over four consecutive nights, the Summer Slam will visit Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway on December 30, followed by a stopover in Toowoomba on December 31 before finishing up at Kingaroy Speedway on January 1.
