Super Sedan Association Media Release
The very best Super Sedan drivers from Queensland and interstate are amongst the entries for the inaugural Super Sedan Summer Slam Tour to be staged over four consecutive nights of racing. It is no exaggeration to say that the Summer Slam has lured the best in the business, with drivers travelling from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia to take on Queensland’s own Super Sedan stars on four distinctly different circuits across the south-east of the state. The tour gets underway at Gympie’s Mothar Mountain Speedway on Thursday, December 29, with round two to be contested at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway on Friday evening (December 30. From Brisbane, teams head west to Toowoomba Speedway for round three on New Year’s Eve (Saturday, December 31), before the tour wraps up at Kingaroy Speedway on Sunday, January 1.
Proudly supported by Think Money, Ian Boettcher Race Parts, Tania’s T’s and Ford Wreckers Redcliffe, the Summer Slam is the biggest gathering of Super Sedan talent for a multi-night schedule of races since the National Super Sedan Series. With four national championship winners amongst the 30 drivers who have nominated to compete in all four rounds, along with several state championship winners and the most successful driver in the country so far this season, the scene is set for four fabulous nights of speedway sedan competition.
Darren Kane, Michael Nicola, Matt Pascoe and Steve Jordan have eight Australian Super Sedan Championship wins between them (and a plethora of state championship successes as well) and all four are amongst the nominations for each of the Summer Slam rounds. Others who have committed to all four rounds of the tour include state championship winners Lachlan Onley, Rod Gough, Matthew Williams and Victoria’s Peter Nicola, who is the current Queensland champion, along with current Super Sedan Association series champion Sean Black and South Australia’s Ryan Alexander, who is bringing some red hot form to Queensland. So far this season, Alexander is yet to be beaten in feature race competition and will be a huge threat at each event despite his lack of familiarity with the host venues.
The list of drivers who have nominated for all four rounds of the 2016/2017 Super Sedan Summer Slam is as follows:
Darren Kane, Matt Pascoe, Michael Nicola, Steve Jordan, Peter Nicola, Matthew Williams, Rod Gough, Lachlan Onley, Sean Black, Ryan Alexander, Leigh Williams
Graeme Elliott, Craig Craft, Wayne Dick, Gavin Northfield, Glenn Boulter, David Musch, Barry Towers, Mark Towers, Darren Anning, Jack Childs, Nick Sampson, Brendan Doyle, Bob McCosker, Barry Craft, Dempsie Pails, Sam Roza, Jason Campbell, Rodney Craft, Mark O’Brien, Justin Randall
Additionally, several drivers have already indicated their intention to join the field for selected rounds. Gympie’s Gavin Lorenson and Tim O’Shea will compete in the opening round on their home track, with O’Shea also competing at Toowoomba and Kingaroy. The New South Wales-based duo of Wayne Brims and Robert Carrig will compete at the Archerfield and Toowoomba rounds, while the final round at Kingaroy will also see Travis Barron and Gavin Fletcher join the field, ensuring more than 30 nominations for every round. Of course, with drivers able to nominate up until the commencement of drivers briefing at each round, there may well be further additions to the line-up in the days ahead. Regardless of whether any more drivers take up the Summer Slam challenge, there is no doubt that these four nights promise to produce some superb competition. In addition to the Super Sedan racing at each round, there is plenty of other racing and entertainment on offer for speedway fans.
In Gympie, series organisers will host a car display and meet-the-drivers barbecue at Lighthorse Oval (adjacent to the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum at Lake Alford) on Thursday from 11.00am to 2.00pm, with proceeds going to Beyond Blue to support their ongoing efforts in providing assistance, advice and advocacy for people suffering Depression and mental illness. The round at Archerfield on Friday night will also include an international Sprintcar program featuring World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz, while the Toowoomba event will feature freestyle motocross, fireworks and a demolition derby. The Kingaroy tour finale will be part of a huge night of sedan racing that will also include the Australian Street Stock Championship, so every round of the Summer Slam is shaping up as something special.
Once Christmas is out of the way and the relatives have returned home, what better way is there to see in the New Year than with four consecutive nights of Super Sedan racing from Australia’s best drivers? With different formats being utilised at the various rounds and each track distinctly different from all the others, the Summer Slam is the ultimate test of preparation, perseverance, determination and skill.
Of course, there is a range of official merchandise to commemorate the first ever Summer Slam tour, with t-shirts ($25.00) and polo shirts ($40.00) available for purchase at each event and there will free posters distributed at each round featuring many of the series stars.
