Super Sedan Association Media Release
There were few surprises in round ten of the Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series at Kingaroy Speedway on Saturday night (March 18), with Darren Kane, Mark Pagel and Matt Pascoe leaving the field in their wake as they put on a terrific three-way fight for the lead in the feature event. By virtue of his pole position start, Kane held sway out front with Pagel in pursuit as Pascoe worked his way forward after initially being snookered back in the pack. With everybody else happy to play follow the leader on the low line, Pascoe used the outside to excellent effect, sweeping around the pack and chasing down both Pagel and Kane before eventually finishing third, with just half a second separating the trio at the fall of the chequer.
Unfortunately, with a few nominated competitors failing to front for competition, just 13 cars took to the track for the heats and it was Kane and Pascoe who wowed the crowd with a couple of sensational runs that certainly compensated for the small field.
The opening heat saw an impressive charge from home track hopeful David Musch as he chased down Ian Brims and Mark Pagel to score a good win, with Brims also moving ahead of early leader Pagel to snare second spot.
Musch’s Kingaroy compatriot Travis Barron endured a less auspicious start to his night when he spun in the opening moments of heat two and exited with a flat tyre, leaving Randall to lead away at the restart and subsequently take the race over Kane and Sean Black.
Heat three saw Kane produce a remarkable drive to bounce back from a slow start and round up the field. Running a very wide line, Kane chased down Randall to take the lead on the penultimate lap, with Pagel finishing third.
On cue, Pascoe produced an almost identical performance in heat four. Having also endured a slow start from the outside front row that saw him shuffled back to fourth at the end of the opening lap, Pascoe stuck firm on the outside and rapidly rounded up Brims, Musch and Black to assume the lead on lap five.
The final two preliminaries were somewhat anti-climactic in comparison, with Barron bouncing back to win heat five ahead of Black and Nicholas O’Keefe before Pascoe doubled up to take out heat six in advance of Matt Williams and Kane.
It was Kane who emerged from the heats as top qualifier, with Pascoe, Black, Musch, Randall and Pagel rounding out the top six. The Penrite Grid Draw saw Kane hold on to the prime starting position for the 40-lap feature event presented by M&N Car Carriers, with Pagel jumping from sixth overall to the outside front row. Musch and Black would share row two as Pascoe was relegated back to position six alongside Randall. Kane jumped clear at the drop of the green to lead Pagel through the opening laps as Randall climbed to third before a restart came following a spin by Brendan Doyle. At the resumption, Randall pounced to usurp Pagel from second spot, with the 7th-starting Williams surging into third and then advancing to second when Randall expired a lap later, prompting another caution. As the field regrouped for the restart, Pascoe was still languishing in seventh spot and was lucky to emerge unscathed when a pile-up put Williams, Mark O’Brien and Dempsie Pails out of action. Resuming from fourth once the track was cleared, Pascoe quickly rounded up Black and then set out after Pagel and Kane. Another spin from Doyle bunched the field for the final time and with a long uninterrupted run to the chequer from this point, the lead trio put on a terrific display. Pascoe edged closer with every circulation and, having moved ahead of Pagel, drew alongside Kane with five laps to run, only to find himself shuffled back to third a lap later. Faultless under pressure, Kane survived to take the race while Pagel scrambled successfully to keep Pascoe at bay. Another close scrap further back saw Black prevail over Ian Brims for fourth, with Musch next best ahead of Barron and Doyle.
The next round of the 2016/2017 Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series will be contested at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway this Saturday night (March 25).
