Super Sedan Association Media Release
In a dominant display that left his rivals floundering, Matt Pascoe romped home to win round seven of the Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series at Gympie’s Mothar Mountain Speedway on Saturday night (February 4). In the absence of several series regulars, Pascoe faced little opposition in the 25-lap Gold Cup feature event and greeted the chequered flag more than 11 seconds clear of his nearest pursuer.
Having led the opening laps from pole position before Pascoe took control, Sam Roza recorded his best ever result with a runner-up finish ahead of Ian Brims and David Musch, with series leader Mark Pagel finishing fifth. Nicholas O’Keefe was next best, with Gordon Shaw, Tony Brinkmann, Sam Grundy and Bob McCosker rounding out the top ten.
Only 15 of the 18 nominated competitors fronted for competition and with both Brian Grundy and Jack Childs failing to proceed beyond hot laps, 13 cars hit the track for the first round of heats. The subsequent loss of Craig Shaw and Dempsie Pails left 11 cars to complete the remaining heats and the feature race presented by Topline Trophies.
Pascoe started the night as he ended it, leading Roza to the line in the opening heat, with Pagel third.
Gordon Shaw took out heat two over Musch and Brinkmann, while Musch improved on that result in heat three when he led Pascoe and McCosker to the line.
David O’Keefe defeated Sam Grundy and Brinkmann in heat four and then Pagel romped home in heat five, leaving Brinkmann to prevail over Gordon Shaw in the fight for the minor placings.
The final heat produced the closest result of the night with less than a second separating the first three cars as Roza downed Brims and Musch.
Roza carried that form into the feature race and led the field through the opening stages. Pascoe moved ahead of Musch on lap two and then reeled in Roza to take control of the race on lap seven, powering away from the field to score an emphatic win to back up his recent Queensland Championship victory, his fastest lap more than half a second quicker than anybody else. Roza remained in second position for the duration, while Brims relegated Musch another spot on lap 16 to finalise the podium positions.
Although both Pascoe and Brims have closed the gap to Pagel in the series standings, the overall order remains the same with Pagel still leading the championship ahead of Brims and Pascoe. However, there are some changes elsewhere in the order with McCosker and David O’Keefe moving into the top five overall while, further down the order, Nicholas O’Keefe and Brinkman have climbed into the top ten.
The next round of the Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series is at Lismore Speedway in northern New South Wales on Saturday, February 18.
