Rockhampton’s Harry Doyle led the way on the opening heat of the night, but was hounded all the way by Atkins in second, and Steve Jordan in third.
Sam Hughes won a thriller in heat two, with the top three finishing within half a second of each other. Rob Hamilton crossed the line in second, narrowly clear of Michael Hally in third.
‘The Joker’ Steve Jordan took out a narrow victory in heat three over Hamilton in second, and Hughes rounding out the podium in third.
Queensland Champion Brad Pascoe dominated the field in the final heat of the night, taking out a five second victory. Atkins charged from the back of the pack for a runner up finish, ahead of Doyle in third.
Hughes qualified on pole position for the twenty five lap main event, with Pascoe set to start on the outside of the front row. Atkins and Hamilton would occupy row two, with Doyle and Jordan set to launch from row three.
Pascoe got a great start from the outside and set off into the lead. Pascoe led the opening from Atkins who disposed of Hughes through turns three and four.
On a track with plenty of character, Pascoe and Atkins set a frenetic pace to charge off into the distance away from the chasing pack.
Meanwhile an intense battle raged on for the final step on the podium, as Hughes, Doyle and Hamilton battled away in the back end of the top five.
Such was the pace out front, the lead pair was into lap traffic after seven laps. Pascoe and Atkins came up on the back of Keith Muller, with Pascoe splitting to the outside and Atkins to the inside.
Atkins got a run on the inside and cleared Muller, and Pascoe in one fell swoop to take the lead with seventeen laps remaining.
Atkins was flying out front, and built a comfortable advantage over Pascoe as they drove through lap traffic.
Pascoe gave chase and was able to close the gap, but Atkins was flawless in traffic and he re-built his advantage.
Atkins set the field alight, lapping everyone on the track except for Pascoe en route to a commanding four second victory that went green to chequer in just six minutes.
Pascoe crossed the line in second, continuing his perfect run of podium finishes to start the season.
Hughes rounded out the podium in third, narrowly ahead of Doyle in fourth, and Hamilton in fifth. Jordan crossed the line in sixth, from Leigh Williams in seventh, Bob McCosker in eighth, and Muller rounding out the finishers in ninth.
