Atkins was on the money right from the get go, going QuickTime in time trials. Brock Atkins was second fastest, a further two tenths back. Zac Brims was third fastest, from Mitchell Gee in fourth, and defending Ian Boettcher Classic Champion JJ Hamilton rounded out the top five.
Queensland Champion Brad Pascoe qualified twenty first, leaving himself in a big hole to dig himself out of. Pascoe got right to work by winning the opening heat of the night. Pascoe led home Brims in second, from ‘The Joker’ Steve Jordan in third.
Brock Atkins stormed from eighth on the grid to win the second heat. The Williams brothers completed the podium with Matt in second, and Leigh rounding out the podium in third.
Todd saw Brock’s win, and said anything you can do, I can do better, and went on to win the final heat of the opening round. Zac Pascoe crossed the line in second, ahead of Gee in third.
Former National Champion Trent Wilson recovered from missing the opening round of heats to win heat four. Rookie Nash Granger was next across the line in second, from Harry Doyle in third.
Michael Hally and Victoria’s Dylan Barrow had a brilliant battle in the penultimate heat of the night, with Hally coming out on top for the heat win. Barrow crossed the line in second, with Brock Atkins rounding out the podium in third.
Pascoe continued the dig mission by winning the final heat of the night. Pascoe led home Todd Atkins in second, and Gee in third.
It was an Atkins Family front row lockout for the preliminary A Main, with Todd to start from pole position, with Brock on his outside.
Brims and Gee would occupy row two, with Pascoe recovering from his 21st qualifying effort to start fifth, with Hally on his outside.
Todd got the perfect start to lead the opening stanza from his brother Brock, Gee, Brims and Pascoe.
Gee looked to be the man on the move, making the middle of the track look racy, as he looked to take second from Brock. Gee showed his nose to Atkins, allowing Atkins to change his line and thwart Gee’s momentum.
Brims slipped off the bottom of the track to allow Pascoe through to fourth, as Hally battled with Matt Williams over sixth position.
Todd looked very comfortable out front as he stretched his advantage over his brother in second.
Matt Williams got all out of shape, and bottlenecked the field in a massive crash that would end the race after eleven laps.
Drivers will return this evening for one more round of heats. That will set the fields for a pair of dashes and the pole shuffle, which will ultimately set the field for the fifty lap $10036 to win Ian Boettcher Classic main event.
