Toowoomba’s own Sean Black continued his strong recent form to start on pole position in the thirty lap main event. Atkins, piloting the Ian Boettcher Mazda RX7 Rotary powered machine joined Black on the front row.
Black got the initial jump, while Atkins settled into second running the top side of the track. Will Hockley secured the best qualifying position of his career to date, and settled into third in the early stages.
Black started strong, but by lap eight, Atkins had closed the gap and began searching for a way past Black in the battle for the lead. Atkins made a move to the inside on lap nine but couldn’t make the move stick.
The lead pair worked their way towards lap traffic. Black, running low, was baulked behind a slower car, leaving the top side open for Atkins to blast by on the outside and into the lead with eighteen laps remaining.
Having started from ninth position former Victorian Champion Mick Nicola Jnr was on the charge. Nicola passed Nash Granger and Hockley in quick succession to take the final spot on the podium with half of the race remaining.
Atkins and Black had built a strong advantage from the rest of the chasing pack as Hockley came under significant pressure from Zac Pascoe in the battle for fourth.
Atkins and Black found themselves in heavy lap traffic which Atkins navigated flawlessly as he put a number of lap cars between himself and Black in the closing stages.
Late in the race, Atkins’ Rotary motor began to show signs of ailment as smoke began to bellow out from Atkins machine.
Despite this Atkins held on to claim the third feature victory of his season ahead of Black in second and Nicola Jnr in third. Pascoe took fourth position with Hockley rounding out the top five.
Granger crossed the line in sixth for the best finish up his young career to date. Former National Champion Trent Wilson was next across the line in seventh, from Sam Hughes in eighth, with Jackson Brims rounding out the top ten.
The McCosker Super Sedan Series will return to action on the 18th of April at Lismore Speedway for round fourteen and the annual GP53.
